Hockey in Bangor was established in 1898. We celebrated our centenary in 2021 as it was from 1921 that we have continuous official records, with the exception of course of the war years. However, between 1898 and 1921 there are references to hockey being played.

It is over 100 years since the first Bangor team took to the field at Jackie Hamilton’s farm on Waverley Drive.

The club has achieved a great deal in its 100 years. Its many successes on the pitch led to multiple league promotions and cup wins. This energy and momentum raised the club’s profile from local to national and then international level, seeing past players, Chris Cargo and Stephen Martin join the ranks of Bangor hockey Olympians!

The profile of the club inspired the growth of hockey as a sport within local schools – Glenlola Collegiate and Bangor Grammar School, the latter of which has won the Irish Schools championships on more than one occasion over the years.

The club’s hard work and influence helped individual players flourish and encouraged the growth of team sports as a whole.

It is the people who bring the spirit and energy to drive a club forward and Bangor Hockey Club has been so lucky to have such a talented and dedicated group of people over the years, to help it grow and achieve so much.

We celebrated our Centenary in 2021, made all the more momentous with the amalgamation of the Ladies and Men’s clubs. On 26th May we celebrate our 5 year anniversary.

Below is a link to our BHC Centenary Book, carefully and expertly curated by George Wilson and Raymond Parker, to whom we are exceptionally grateful for providing us with this gift.
