Camps

Hockey is a skill game, to get better at it just requires making the decision to practice. A fun way to do this during the holidays is attend a Hockey Camp.

All the camps listed here are good  (or they wouldn’t be on this list) and roughly the same price based on a there day rates, so it will really comes down to your daughters, age, current hockey level, the dates you can do, how far you want to travel, how long they want to be on the camp and probably most importantly how many of their friends are going.

Age Category: 7-11 (P4 to P7)

Location: Bangor Aurora

Description:

Local camp (early August) which has an emphasis on fun and skills development. Do not have to be a member of Bangor L.H.C to attend. Ideal if you want to get a taster of hockey before the new hockey season and or before going to big school

Location: Glenlola Collegiate

Description:

New camp for 2018 (mid August). Great idea both from a Glenlola Hockey perspective and for girls attending Glenlola to make new friends before they start.

Age Category: p2 – Y11 (Boys and Girls)

Location: Londonderry Park

Description:

Run Summer (week long end of July) and Easter camps that are open to boys and girls. For all abilities with an emphasis on having fun while learning the fundamentals of hockey.

Age Category: Age 6-12 and Age 12-15 (Boys and Girls)

Location: Comber Leisure Centre

Description:

Run by N.D.H.C. for a number of years. Camp is split between age 6-12 and Ages 12-15 with both categories having two session during the summer (late July and early August). The younger category runs during the day and the older one in the evenings. Split age category camps allowing the juniors to focus on fun and fundamentals whilst the older boys an girls focus on more advanced skills and game development.

Age Category: 7 to 15 years old (Boys and Girls)

Location: Held all over Ulster but Playball Stormont or St Colmans Ballynahinch are probably the most convenient

Description:

Official Ulster Hockey courses open to everyone if you can get your name down quickly. Run during all major school holidays and run by U.H. approved coaches. General format is skills in the morning, games in the afternoon. Normally have prizes for best player and most improved.

Age Category: U11, U12 and U12-U15 (Girls and Boys)

Location: Over Ulster, but normally one at Playball Stormont or Regent School.

Description:

Invite only Camps. To get your name on the list requires to have been nominated for one of the Ulster Hockey Talent Development programs which run at Primary School, Year 8/9 (Talent Development Academy) and Year 9/10/11 (Talent Development Program). Its not quite that simple as U.H. are aligned with the Irish Age Group System; so its done on year of birth in 2 year bands i.e 2002-2003. Nominations for one of the programs is done via schools (approx 4 per school) except for the Talent Development Program which takes nominations from School and Club and has a trial phase before entry into the program.

Main aim of the camps are advanced skills in a collective environment of more advanced hockey players, coached by highly qualified coaches and international players. Talent Camps normally run during each major holiday. Format is generally skills in the morning and matches in the afternoon. Also give out prizes for best player, winning team, most improved.

Age Category: 13 – your never to old to learn

Location: Roughfort Playing Fields (BRA) Mallusk Newtonwabbey

Description:

Stephen Watt is regarded as one of best technical Hockey coaches in Ireland. His clinics are designed for advanced level players i.e. your on one one of the U.H. Talent programs or playing for a school u14 A team, 1st XI or senior division one/Premier/EYHL club 1st XI/2nd XI.

Clinics are very focused on specific areas of the game and normally limited to 12-14 individuals i.e.a far greater focus on the individual. The camps are primarily focused on improving the players skills and not “fun through hockey”; however if you want to improve and are dedicated these camps will help immensely.

Age Category: 8 – 15 (Boys and Girls)

Location: The “Dub” Queens Playing Fields Belfast

Description:

Run by Adam Loudan, Lisnagarvey Ladies 1st XI and Ulster Boys coach, staffed by  a number of Irish and Ulster representative players. Emphasis on hockey skills development in a  fun atmosphere. Have prizes in various categories, plus other goodies and normally do a Q&A with a current Irish International player.Very popular camps with a good reputation.

Age Group: P4 to 3rd form (Boys and Girls)

Location: Campbell College

Description:

THT stands for Transforming Hockey Talent.  Not had much experience with these camps, but BLHC Juniors coach Ruth and her daughter are big advocates. The coaching staff have an impressive CV (Irish internationals) and you can win some nice Nedstar hockey sticks and accessories. Emphasis is on developing the fundamentals of hockey in a fun environment.

Location: Strathearn School

Description:

Well established and popular summer camp, especially with Strathearn girls. Run buy  the Harvey family who are ex internationals. Focus on fun skills development.

Description:

Relatively new camp. Similar to other camps i.e. fun, skills, prizes. Run two summer camps in August with former and current internationals.

Age Category: U11, U13 and U15 (boys and girls)

Location: Strathearn School

Description:

Not strictly a camp, but PSI Belfast bears run a series of indoor hockey coaching sessions including  a taster session from approx November through to end of May. At the end of this the Bears take a number of squads to the PSI Ireland end of season Showdown in Dublin where they play the six other Irish Franchises. Run by a group of experienced indoor hockey players (which there are not to many of in Ulster).

Pro Series Indoor started in South Africa and has approx 12,000 members playing under a number of Franchises. Indoor hockey is set to grow in Ireland as Irish Hockey have announced they will be sending teams to the next world cup and with experience in Ulster limited this is a great way to get involved.

Location: Holland (Amsterdam) and Spain (Barcelona)

Description:

For the more adventurous Hockey player!! If you fancy improving your Hockey skills in the best hockey nation in the world, plus have a bit of a holiday then this is for you. Camp types range from improver camps to elite camps. There seem to be a small number of girls doing this type of camp.

As of summer 2019 Sportsways are also running a Ulster camp at Lisnagarvey Hockey Club
